This is the first and foremost strategy to do SEO without paying any money. Google trends keep you abreast of the latest happenings in your domain for getting ideas on fresh keywords. Open Google Trends browser and check which search terms or words are trending. You will get a country wise list from where you make your SEO keyword assumptions.

You will have to set trend alerts for specific terms that you prefer.

Go to https://www.google.com/alerts and add specific terms of your choice in the box. You will get a notification “Create Alert” Click to save your alert. Google will send you email notifications of the trends collected from leading publications, meetings, high level events, social media conversations, etc. You can make your choice of receiving notifications daily, weekly, and so on.

Step into your audience’s shoes

Before trying out the best free SEO tools, you need to do some homework about your audience’s needs. You don’t know them in person. So, how can you know what they are likely to look for?

The best way is to be the audience or customer yourself. As a part of the audience, what you will be looking for in that particular niche? For example, if you are searching for healthy diet, what information or solution would fulfill your needs or solve a specific problem?

If you are the customer, you may look for healthy diet for weight loss, healthy diet for glowing skin, healthy diet for silky hair, and what not. Get creative by creating keywords like ways to make your healthy diet work for you, how can you create your healthy diet at office, or how to select the best healthy diet ingredients.

Cash in on the power of Google auto suggestions

These keywords may seem to be long and unusual but keep in mind, your objective is to solve the audience’s problem not to feed the search engine. More you use targeted keywords to address a specific issue of your audience, you have a better chance of ranking high in the search engine.

Whenever you search for something, Google auto search comes up with many other related searches. You must have noticed this. These are the searches posted by your audience. Analyzing these keywords will give you a fair idea of what your audience is looking for.

And have you ever thought of using the snippet questions as your keyword search strategy? You get these questions as soon as you put any search word in Google search engine. I consider it one of the best free SEO tools online. These questions mean that your audience is looking for proper information and solutions about that particular topic or subject.

Select the Content Format as per the Keyword demand

Do you know keywords also work better with a specific content format?Consider these 3 keywords: “business ideas”, “meditation tips”, and “become a content writer”

Check 3 screenshots for the search results as given below:

“Business ideas”

“Meditation tips”

“become a content writer”

The first two keywords showed listicle type of articles in the search results, which implies that these kinds of keywords will rank better with listicle format of content.

The third keyword “become a content writer” showed “How to”  or Guide type of content format in the search result. This means such keywords do well with ‘How to’ type content. You need to study the intent of keywords carefully before creating the content.

High-volume low-competition keywords, the easiest way to do SEO without paying any money

You might as well know about Google Keyword planner that comes with Google Ads. You get tons of keywords which you can download for future reference. Should you go for random Keyword selection from the sheet? Definitely not. You will find high-volume high-competition keywords, high volume low competition keywords, and low-volume low competition keywords.

Which one you should select?

High-volume high-competition means people are searching for that topic in huge numbers and there is massive content already there to serve their purpose. It would be difficult for you to Be in the Know amid a huge competition.

High-volume low- competition keyword means more people are searching for those keywords but the information out there is limited. This means the competition is low. You have to create such a unique content that you immediately come to notice to a particular audience segment plus others as well.

Low-volume low-competition keyword means very few people are looking for such topics and the information out there is also very little or zero. Does that mean you won’t consider those at all?

Your ideal keywords in your blog should include some of all the keyword categories with more focus on the high-volume and low-competition keywords. Such a situation obviously demands you create unique content!

Another common term associated with SEO keyword search is Keyword Difficulty Score (KDS). Ideally, a KDS below 60% is suitable to select. Too low KDS like 30-40 percent means that there are hardly any searches related to it.

You will get a fair idea about this with Google Keyword Planner.  Free SEO tools online will not give you such detailed insights and will be restricted to a few days or 1 month trial. If you are looking for one of the best free SEO tool, try Mozbar that helps you track easy and difficult keywords faster.

So, what will be your solution to do SEO without paying any money?

Look for long tail keywords

Many content writers often overlook the long tail keywords that appear at the bottom of the Google search page. Some of the best free SEO tools will also help you with those keywords.  But the problem is, long tail keywords often are in incorrect syntax or grammar making the content writer’s job difficult. You need to fit long tail keywords intelligently into a sentence to make it sound sensible and interesting.

It is hard to create grammatically correct sentences with keywords like skin care men, skin care health tips, etc. You need not worry about that. Adjust the words to create meaningful sentences.

You can pick up long tail keywords from comments in forums, social media communities, and other groups. Many content writers miss this key aspect. People normally use natural language while searching for keywords and that gets reflected in comments too. You need to be a bit observant on this.

How to get good long tail keywords?

You have to depend on the Google Keyword tool or keyword planner for this. Get the broad match, exact match and CPC data to find the search volume and the level of competitiveness of the particular long tail keywords. Higher the CPC, higher is the competition, and higher is the KDS.

Numbers do not say everything, especially about long tail keywords.

You cannot take it for sure that all long tail keywords with decent search volume and competitiveness can be used to create high-quality quantity content that will add value for your audience. You need to use your creative brain to mix and match some specific keywords and create content focused on these.

The basic idea is that: it is not wholly a mechanical and formula based exercise. The art of doing it is usually a winning factor.

Some long tail keywords may not show any decent search volume or competition metrics but chances of creating high-quality content on it are high. You should go for it without caring for the numbers. These low-searched keywords are often successful in pulling a decent volume of audience.

Ultimately, as I have explained in my previous blogs, uniqueness in content matters more than anything else. And keyword placement is just a smart strategy to be in the know.

What should be the keyword length?

Long tail keywords give you a competitive advantage provided you choose the quality ones that will serve a purpose. What about the length? Ideally, it should have a minimum of 4 words.

Longer the keyword length, more specific is the search. This is what you should target. I talked about building a niche in content writing in one of my earlier blogs. It is here that your expertise or authority over your niche comes into play.

Build your knowledge of Keyword Golden Ratio (KGR) and Allintitle

Consider two keywords:  women’s night dresses and women’s cheap night dresses. The latter indicates a more specific search than the former. You may select 3-4 words for your long tail keyword but make sure the search is more specific. Else the strategy won’t work.

You know getting ranked on Google with the right keyword is a sort of demand-supply game. If your content has highly-demanded keywords ( or key to solutions/problems), chances your page ranking within a few search results are very high.

Apart from all the techniques mentioned above, there is another technique with Keyword Golden Ratio. You will find a lot of materials about this in the internet. In short, it is a ratio between the Allintitle results of keyword search and the total search volume.

What is Allintitle? It is an advanced SEO keyword search tool that will show up the pages with exact those keywords in the title. You will have to search  like this:

allintitle: “your long tail keyword”

Then get the usual search volume with normal keyword search. Dividing Allintitle search number by the usual search volume number gives you the Keyword Golden Ratio.

The rule of the thumb, your KGR should be below or equal to 0.25. You can go till maximum 1. But make sure, you search low volume keywords that give 250 or less than 250 monthly search volumes. Bit tough but doable.

If you want to know about the best free SEO tools regarding KGR, you can use Keyword surfer Chrome extension. The problem with free SEO tools is that they don’t churn up the accurate numbers which can be misleading. However, it will still provide useful insights into keyword ideas that you can try.

Dive into other community platforms

You can get a good deal of SEO keyword search ideas if you search other community platforms like Quora, Reddit, and other niche platforms. As I said, your audience likes to interact in natural languages; specific questions put by them can be your rewarding keyword. Most of the times, questions will be like How to do this or How do I get this or What is the cost of this type of questions.

Check the following screenshots:

Visit platforms like Reddit and Quora where you see A2A interactions. Put those queries in Google search and check the results.

Include the focus keyword in meta description

Writing an attention-grabbing meta description for your blogs is always desirable. But what writers miss most often is that they forget to include the focus keyword in it.

Make sure to select the right focus keyword which you should place in your article heading and also in the meta description. The focus keyword should be the centerpiece around which your blog topic will evolve. When this focus keyword appears in the meta description, it makes Google search engine find your blog easily.

Your focus keyword should have:

  1. A reasonable search volume
  2. A feasible Keyword Difficulty Score
  3. Content matching with the intent of search.
